The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has developed a free mobile app that allows users to evaluate the safety record of a particular bus company before booking their trip. Called SaferBus, the app also allows users to report complaints, determine if a bus company is operating illegally and evaluate the bus company’s track record for safety.
Whether it’s for individual travel or group events, buses are a popular form of transportation in America. But there are also tens of thousands of accidents on America’s roads. As many as 24,000 people suffer in injury bus crashes each year. In Kentucky, two people were transported to the hospital in August in a car accident where a bus driver in Louisville failed to negotiate a turn properly and hit another car.
The main advantage of the SaferBus app is that passengers are able to make an informed decision about their transportation options. For example, buses that are operating without valid U.S. Department of Transportation operating authority or that do not comply with federal insurance requirements are illegal and should be avoided.
Furthermore, the FMCSA rating system indicates whether a company has a positive history of safety on the roads. App users can learn whether the company they are considering has a satisfactory, conditional or unsatisfactory rating as they prepare to make reservations.
