Adjustable Mattress Bases Recalled By Kentucky Manufacturer Due To Fire Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission recently issued a recall of several models of adjustable mattress bases, or “power foundations,” manufactured by Leggett & Platt of Georgetown, KY.

According to the recall notice, components in the “Titanium,” “Gold” and “Signature” bed frames sold between March 2008 and October 2011 have failed in at least 29 reported cases. The malfunction can cause electrical parts to short out, resulting in overheating and a possible risk of fire.

Power foundations have also been recalled for other brand names, including Interflex, American Signature, Spring Air, Sealy and Simmons.

Power foundations are motorized bed bases that are controlled by a handheld remote and allow consumers to elevate their heads or feet into a position that suits them. The Leggett & Platt frames come in all bed sizes.

Although no personal injuries or property damage has been reported to the CPSC yet, the attorneys and staff at Frank Jenkins Law Office strongly urge consumers with adjustable bed frames to make sure that their models are not included in the product recall. You can do that by following the commission’s recommendations, listed below:

  • Look at your remote control. They will be black or dark gray, with many buttons and labeled with the manufacturer’s name.
  • If your label reads “Adjustables” by Leggett & Platt, Interflex, Sealy, Simmons or Spring Air, it is part of the recall.
  • Unplug your power cord and stop using the motorized function of the beds. Then call Leggett at (855) 853-3539 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday Eastern Time. The company will arrange an in-home repair or send you a modification kit with instructions for installation.

Lawsuits involving defective products fall under an area of personal injury law known as product liability. If you are injured by a consumer product malfunction, you may be eligible for compensation.
